The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) and the Kaduna State Government have empowered 500 residents with solar home systems, clean cooking stoves and support packs in Kaduna, Nigeria, on Monday, 19 October 2026, in a joint initiative aimed at easing household economic pressures, improving access to energy and creating opportunities for grassroots enterprise.

The beneficiaries comprise 450 women and 50 men drawn from all 23 local government areas of Kaduna State.

The distribution took place under the NASENI Sustainable Empowerment Programme, themed “Innovating Today, Empowering Tomorrow”, which seeks to translate advances in science and engineering into practical solutions for everyday challenges.

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani described the intervention as part of his administration’s efforts to expand economic opportunities and improve living standards through science, technology and collaboration with federal institutions.

“These interventions are designed to ease household burdens, support small businesses and improve productivity through the practical application of science and technology,” Sani said.

The governor commended President Bola Tinubu for supporting initiatives intended to translate the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda into tangible benefits for Nigerians.

Sani also praised NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, for advancing innovation and partnerships designed to bring technological solutions closer to local communities.

The programme comes at a time when many Nigerian households and small businesses face persistent pressure from the cost of energy, cooking fuel and other essential expenses.

By distributing solar home systems and cleaner cooking equipment, the initiative seeks to address some of these everyday challenges while extending access to technologies that may otherwise remain unaffordable for lower-income families.

For households receiving the solar systems, access to reliable lighting could offer practical benefits beyond the immediate reduction in dependence on other lighting sources.

Children may have more opportunities to study after dark, while traders and small-scale business owners could find it easier to carry out certain activities during evening hours, depending on the capacity of the equipment supplied.

Halilu said the solar home systems were intended to provide household lighting and support children’s learning after sunset.

He also explained that the clean cooking stoves were designed to reduce fuel consumption and exposure to smoke when operated correctly.

“The objective is to make science and engineering work for ordinary Nigerians by providing practical solutions to everyday challenges,” Halilu said.

The clean cooking component is particularly significant for households where traditional cooking methods can involve substantial fuel use and prolonged exposure to smoke.

Depending on the stove technology and the fuel used, cleaner cooking solutions can help reduce household air pollution and the time or money spent obtaining cooking fuel.

However, the scale of these benefits will depend on how effectively the equipment is used, its suitability for recipients’ cooking needs and the availability of fuel, maintenance and replacement parts.

The programme’s longer-term impact will therefore be clearer when information becomes available on household adoption, energy savings and the condition of the equipment over time.

Women account for 90 per cent of the 500 beneficiaries, with 450 women receiving support compared with 50 men.

The distribution reflects the programme’s emphasis on women, young people and underserved communities, groups that can face significant barriers to accessing productive assets, affordable energy and enterprise support.

For women managing households or running small businesses, the combination of solar equipment, cooking technology and support packs could provide several forms of assistance at once.

Reduced energy expenditure may free up limited household resources, while more dependable lighting could help some traders extend their working hours or improve their operating conditions.

The support packs are intended to provide additional assistance to households facing economic difficulties, helping recipients meet some immediate needs.

NASENI did not specify the monetary value of the packs in the announcement, making it difficult to quantify the total financial benefit delivered to each household.

Sani said distributing the items across all 23 local government areas was intended to promote balanced development and ensure that the intervention reached communities beyond the state capital.

He urged beneficiaries to make effective use of the equipment, stressing that its proper utilisation would be important to the programme’s success.

The governor also directed the coordinating team to maintain transparency throughout the distribution process and keep accurate records of beneficiaries.

Such measures could help strengthen accountability, limit duplication and provide a clearer basis for assessing whether the support reaches its intended recipients.

Beyond immediate household benefits, NASENI sees the programme as an opportunity to encourage wider adoption of locally produced technologies and stimulate activity across the clean-energy value chain.

Halilu said the use of the equipment could support enterprise development and create opportunities in local production, distribution, installation and maintenance.

These activities could offer technical employment and business prospects if demand grows and appropriate training, spare parts and after-sales services are available.

The agency’s approach is guided by the principles of creation, collaboration and commercialisation.

The framework is intended to move technological innovation beyond development and demonstration towards practical applications that can reach communities and contribute to economic activity.

NASENI has also emphasised the importance of feedback from recipients, which could help identify technical difficulties, improve the design and distribution of future interventions, and establish whether the equipment continues to meet household needs after the initial handover.

The agency thanked the Kaduna State Government, traditional institutions, community leaders and implementation partners for supporting the initiative.

Halilu urged recipients to use the equipment safely and maintain it properly to maximise its useful life.

The collaboration illustrates how federal agencies and state governments can work together to bring technology-based interventions to communities.

Its longer-term value, however, will depend not simply on the number of items distributed but on whether households can use them reliably, whether the equipment remains functional and whether the intervention produces measurable improvements in living conditions.

For the 500 beneficiaries, the distribution offers an opportunity to gain access to practical tools that may ease some daily pressures.

For the implementing institutions, the next challenge will be to sustain that benefit through proper follow-up, technical support and transparent evaluation.

As NASENI and Kaduna State pursue further grassroots interventions, evidence of household energy savings, improved access to lighting, reduced cooking-fuel consumption and emerging business opportunities will help establish how far the programme’s ambitions translate into lasting improvements for residents.
