Ebola: Expert warns Nigerians against kissing, hugging

President of the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria, Professor Oladapo Ashiru, has urged Nigerians to avoid unnecessary physical contact, including kissing, hugging and handshaking, following the confirmation of an imported Ebola case in Abuja.

Ashiru gave the advice on Wednesday during an interview with Arise Television, where he explained how the virus spreads and outlined measures Nigerians can take to reduce the risk of infection.

According to the medical expert, Ebola is not transmitted through the air but primarily spreads through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person who is showing symptoms.

“Ebola is not airborne. But avoid kisses, hugs and handshakes,” Ashiru said.

He urged Nigerians to maintain reasonable physical distance and observe strict hygiene and infection prevention measures, particularly in situations where there may be a risk of exposure to an infected person.

Ashiru also called for the immediate activation of high-alert public health protocols across the country.

He urged authorities to strengthen screening at airports, seaports and land borders, while maintaining strict infection prevention and control measures in healthcare facilities.

The medical expert further advised health workers to maintain a high index of suspicion and ensure that suspected cases are promptly isolated and managed to reduce the risk of further transmission.

His warning follows the Federal Government’s confirmation of an imported Ebola case in Abuja on Tuesday.

The Federal Ministry of Health said the female patient arrived in Nigeria from Uganda, developed symptoms on October 7 and tested positive for Ebola on October 20.

Health authorities have identified 44 contacts linked to the confirmed case and commenced monitoring as part of efforts to prevent further transmission.

The development has prompted heightened surveillance and preparedness measures across states, with health authorities urging Nigerians to remain vigilant while avoiding panic and misinformation.

Ebola can cause symptoms including fever, severe weakness, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.

Symptoms can develop between two and 21 days after exposure.

Ashiru’s advice comes as Nigeria’s health authorities intensify efforts to contain the imported case and prevent any wider spread of the virus.
