Gunmen suspected to be terrorists have kidnapped passengers travelling from Yauri in Kebbi State to Abuja, forcing them to contact their relatives and appeal for help while held at gunpoint.
The incident is reported to have occurred on Sunday. A video circulating on social media shows more than 10 victims, including the driver, being held by armed men. Some of the captives appear tied and blindfolded.
In the footage, the gunmen, armed with what appear to be AK-47 rifles, compel the victims to make phone calls to their families. One captive is seen speaking to his mother while a rifle is pointed at the group.
The driver, who identified himself as IBB Birni Yawuri, was also forced to send a message to his relatives, stating that they had fallen into the hands of kidnappers while on their way to Abuja.
Details of the exact location of the attack, the identities of all the victims and any ransom demands remain unclear. Security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the latest reports.
The abduction has renewed concerns about the safety of travellers on inter-state routes in the region.
