Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has joked about the Republican Party’s defeat in the United States midterm elections after spending hundreds of millions of dollars supporting the party’s political campaigns.
Musk made the remark on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, in a post on his X account, following the Democrats’ victory in Tuesday’s elections, which saw the party take control of both chambers of Congress.

“Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time,” Musk wrote, adding a shrug emoji.
The comment came after Democrats secured control of the Senate and House of Representatives in a major setback for President Donald Trump’s political agenda.
According to campaign finance tracker OpenSecrets, Musk contributed nearly $500m to Republican political efforts, making him the largest individual contributor in a federal election cycle since unlimited election spending was allowed in 2010.
Most of his donations went to his Republican-leaning America PAC and the Republican Senate Leadership Fund, a political action committee supporting Republican Senate candidates.
The Senate Leadership Fund reportedly used $158m in donations from Musk in September to support Republican candidate Ken Paxton in Texas.
However, Paxton lost the race to Democrat James Talarico, who became the first Democrat to win statewide office in Texas since 1994.
Speaking at his victory rally in Austin, Talarico criticised the political and financial influence mobilised against his campaign.
In this race, we went up against our own Goliaths.
The richest man in the world, the most powerful man in the world and the entire Washington, DC establishment,” he said.

Musk’s post followed the defeat of several Republican candidates and the party’s wider losses in the midterm elections, despite substantial financial support from the billionaire.
