Afrobeat maestro, Femi Kuti, has hit back at those calling on him to join calls to protest the increase in petrol pump price.
Recall that the Federal Government recently approved the increment of ex-depot price of petrol from N148 to N151 per litre.
Some critics had advised Femi Kuti to join the call for protests like he did during the Occupy Nigeria protest against removal of petrol subsidy in 2012.
However, in a social media post, the musician said he would never be a part of politically-motivated movements.
He said although he initially expressed enthusiasm in the 2012 protest, he immediately pulled back when he noticed the political undertone.
He said it was this same reason he declined Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s call to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“I want to state for clarity and posterity my role in the Ojota protest,” he wrote on Twitter.
“I was invited for what I and many believed was a genuine cause regarding the cost of fuel.
“As soon as I found out it was politically motivated I pulled out. I got a lot of backlash at the time but stood my ground.
“For the record, I have never and will never affiliate with any political party that I don’t feel has the genuine interest of the people of Nigeria at heart.
“Even when the VP approached me to join APC, I blatantly refused as I also refused to join PDP or any other political party,” Femi Kuti stated.
