‘They were peaceful’ Adekoya condemns military action against #EndSARS protesters

Deputy Minority Whip, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Adekoya Adesegun Abdel-Majid has condemned wanton killings and the use of Live ammunition against peaceful protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos and other parts of the country on Tuesday.

Recall that the military attacked the protesters at the tollgate on Tuesday night and allegedly killed and maimed some protesters.

In a statement signed by the lawmaker and made available to Freelanews, Hon. Adekoya said, “The protesters in Lekki have demonstrated in the last thirteen days that protests can be as peaceful as there was no record of violence recorded against them; instead they have held their protests peacefully in a Carnival-like manner. It is however unthinkable that Security Operatives who are being paid to protect Nigeria and its citizens will turn their guns against the same people that they are being paid to protect.

“I wept for the first time in the last forty years seeing images of peaceful protesters being mowed down by elements of the the Sate Security Operatives while those who attacked police men, burnt down police stations, carted away guns and ammunitions and setting prisoners free walks away free.

“I am particularly worried about what a country we are leading as leaders where disproportionate forces will be unleashed against the same citizens that we swore to protect. Citizens of Hong Kong have been protesting about their Constitutional status for several months now, and we have not heard of any use of lethal weapons to disperse them.

“One would have thought that our Security Agencies can be more professional on intelligence gathering to separate peaceful demonstrators from rioters and hoodlums who are taking opportunities of the protests to causing mayhems, attacking police stations and burning properties.”
