Following examination of a report by the Committee on Aviation, the Senate enacted the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency Bill (NAMA) 2022.

The bill, which was passed on Wednesday, intends to abolish the NAMA Act 2010 in order to provide effective air navigation services in Nigeria, according to Chairman of the Committee Smart Adeyemi (Kogi West).

He explained that the bill is one of six Aviation Executive Bills referred to the Committee by the Senate, all of which deal with critical issues such as aviation legislation, training, management, and safety.

He stated that the NAMA Act entered into force on May 26, 1999, and has been in operation for twenty-two years, but that the 2010 Act revisions are aimed at aligning the Agency with new industry operational criteria as specified by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

“The problems raised by the Bill are critical in maintaining safe air travel and are part of efforts to improve the overall health and profitability of the aviation sector for public benefit,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has said that commercial motorcycling around the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos has been prohibited and the entire axis declared safe.

In a statement by the General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Henrietta Yakubu, the agency said that reports claiming that there is looming insecurity in the airport is false, insisting that all Nigerian airports are safe.

“FAAN will like to inform the general public that there is no looming insecurity in Murtala Muhammed Airport and re-emphasise that commercial motorcycling around the airport axis has been prohibited, and remains so, as indicated by the various signages within and around the airport corridor.
