As it concluded on the month long activities to celebrate this year’s World Press Freedom Day, the United States of America has stated that the immense contributions of the Nigerian media to truth, preserving democracy and entrenching good governance can not be overemphasised.

This was made known recently by the acting US consul general, Jim Suor, in Lagos when key media practitioners were hosted to a luncheon and reception in Lagos to commemorate the special day.

“This reception is to recognise and celebrate your hardwork and tenacity in fighting corruption, holding governments accountable and calling out injustice which often comes with great personal risks.

“I want you all to know that the United State government recognises the immense contribution of the Nigerian media to truth, preserving democracy, good governance and shaping public policy,” Suor said.

The acting consul general told Freelanews correspondent and other media practitioners present at the event that the United States will continue to support free speech.

“The United States government will continue to emphasise the value of promoting and protecting free speech because the media plays a central role in preserving democracy and providing information that saves lives,” he revealed.
