This initiative began with a meeting at the Office of the Mayor of Boston on Wednesday, 22 January 2025. Dr Oyegbola-Sodipo met with Boston’s economic and development team, led by Mr Segun Idowu, Chief Economic Opportunity and Inclusion Officer, and pitched Abeokuta as a hub for cultural, business, and educational exchanges.

During the meeting, Dr Oyegbola-Sodipo highlighted Abeokuta’s unique assets, describing it as Nigeria’s educational capital with close proximity to Lagos and vast arable land, 70% of which is suitable for agricultural ventures like cassava farming.

He emphasised the city’s readiness for partnerships that would foster economic growth and international collaboration.

Mr Idowu expressed excitement about the proposal, noting that Dr Oyegbola-Sodipo was the first Nigerian representative to present such a proposition to Boston’s mayoral office.

He welcomed the potential inclusion of Abeokuta in Boston’s larger sister-city framework, which seeks to connect policymakers, entrepreneurs, and international businesses to promote mutual economic and cultural growth.

The discussion also touched on engaging Boston’s largest Black community, with Mr Idowu underscoring the city’s appeal as a hub for investors, venture capitalists, and entrepreneurs due to its strong educational and innovative environment.

He noted that this partnership could create pathways for Abeokuta to attract proven investors and explore diverse opportunities for development.
