Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group and Africa’s richest man, plans to dedicate one-third of his wealth to charity, with his daughter Halima Dangote revealing that the move forms part of his long-term succession strategy.

Halima Dangote, a trustee of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, disclosed the billionaire’s philanthropic commitment in an interview with Bloomberg published on Tuesday, explaining that Dangote had secured family approval for 33 per cent of his estate to be directed towards humanitarian causes.

The planned donation would represent one of the largest charitable commitments announced by an African businessman. Based on Dangote’s estimated net worth of $35.1 billion, the proposed contribution would be worth about $11.7 billion if his fortune remains at the current level.

Halima said her father views giving back as a major part of his legacy and has built philanthropy into the family’s future plans.

“He sort of put all the structure in place whereby we focus a lot on health and education. He actually donated 25 per cent to the foundation. If you look at it, it is what we call in Sharia Code in Islam; it means he has donated 33 per cent of his whole inheritance to his foundation,” she said.

She added that Dangote believes charitable efforts should continue beyond his lifetime and become a lasting family responsibility.

“Philanthropy needs to be in existence generation after generation. So giving back is part and parcel of what we do,” Halima said.

The decision builds on decades of philanthropic work through the Aliko Dangote Foundation, which was established in 1994 and has become one of Africa’s largest private charitable organisations.

According to Halima, the foundation received a $1.25 billion endowment about a decade ago and has since attracted an additional $700 million in funding. Its programmes focus mainly on healthcare, education, nutrition and humanitarian support.

She explained that about 70 per cent of the foundation’s spending is directed towards projects in Nigeria, while 20 per cent supports initiatives across Africa and the remaining funds are allocated to global causes.

Among the foundation’s major interventions are partnerships aimed at improving healthcare delivery, supporting vulnerable communities and contributing to the successful eradication of wild poliovirus in Africa alongside organisations including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and government partners.

Dangote’s planned donation comes as billionaire philanthropy continues to gain global attention, with wealthy individuals increasingly using their fortunes to support social development initiatives.

Earlier in 2026, Dangote was recognised by TIME magazine among the world’s most influential philanthropists through its TIME100 Philanthropy list, highlighting the impact of his foundation’s work across Africa.

The businessman’s latest commitment reinforces his stated belief that commercial success should be accompanied by meaningful contributions to society, particularly in areas affecting public welfare and human development.
