Gingerrr, The Herd and To Kill A Monkey lead a competitive AMVCA 2026 race ahead of Saturday’s awards in Lagos
The 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards is set to take centre stage on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Eko Hotel and Suites, with some of Africa’s biggest film and television stars expected in attendance.

Widely regarded as the continent’s premier celebration of screen excellence, this year’s ceremony will honour achievements across 32 categories, including jury-decided awards, audience-voted recognitions, and special honours.
Organisers also expanded the awards structure with new categories for Indigenous Language films from North and Central Africa, reflecting the growing diversity of African storytelling.
Leading this year’s AMVCA 2026 nominees are Gingerrr and The Herd with nine nominations each, while To Kill A Monkey secured eight nods.
My Father’s Shadow followed closely with seven nominations, setting up an intensely competitive awards night.
The acting categories feature a blend of veteran stars and emerging talents. Sola Sobowale earned nominations in both lead and supporting categories, while actors including Lateef Adedimeji and Uzor Arukwe also secured major nods.
Fast-rising actress Genoveva Umeh received her first nomination in the Best Lead Actress category for her role in The Herd, strengthening her growing reputation within the industry.
In the Best Movie category, Behind The Scenes, The Serpent’s Gift and 3 Cold Dishes will compete against other acclaimed productions for the top prize.
The Best Director category includes Akinola Davies Jr for My Father’s Shadow and Tunde Kelani for Cordelia.
Among audience favourites, The Real Housewives Of Lagos, Nigerian Idol and Ultimate Girls Trip: Africa secured nominations in the Best Series Unscripted category.
The awards ceremony is expected to attract actors, producers, directors, streaming executives, and entertainment stakeholders from across the continent for a glamorous celebration of African creativity and storytelling.
