The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Esther Onyekesi, disclosed this in Awka on Monday, June 15, 2026, while addressing journalists on the incident.
She said the state had taken immediate steps after being alerted to the case, describing the act as “barbaric” and unacceptable.
“The boy is receiving treatment now. My team and the Obosi community woman leader visited him,” she said.
Onyekesi commended residents who reported the incident, noting that public vigilance played a key role in ensuring the child was rescued and placed under care.
“The offenders must face the law for this barbaric act. If you see something, please say something,” she added.
The case gained public attention after a viral video showed the minor with severe injuries allegedly inflicted by his guardians, sparking widespread outrage on social media and prompting calls for justice.
Reports also indicated that residents of the area had earlier confronted the suspected guardians following the circulation of the footage.
