All Progressives Congress releases screening timetable for National Assembly aspirants in Abuja

The ruling party will reopen its electronic register on August 31, requiring existing members to validate their records and new entrants to register with a valid NIN

The All Progressives Congress will reopen its nationwide electronic membership registration exercise on Monday, August 31, 2026, giving existing members an opportunity to validate their records and prospective members a fresh route into the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka announced the exercise in Abuja on Tuesday, August 25, saying the registration would be conducted across all wards nationwide.

The party said the initiative was intended to create a more reliable and digitally managed membership register as preparations for the next general election gather pace. (Vanguard News)

Existing members will be required to validate their membership details, while new and intending members will be able to register and formally join the party.

The APC said prospective registrants must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid National Identification Number. (Trending News)

Morka urged party stakeholders, supporters and members to participate actively, describing the exercise as an important step towards strengthening the party’s organisational structure and improving access to membership information.

“The E-Registration Exercise is designed to digitise the Party’s membership register, ensure the integrity of membership records, enhance efficient access to membership data for planning and management decisions, promote internal democracy, and strengthen the Party’s commitment to democratic innovation in Nigeria,” Morka said. The reopening comes several months after the APC conducted a nationwide electronic membership registration and revalidation exercise earlier in 2026.

That exercise began in January, with the party later extending the deadline from January 31 to February 8 following requests from stakeholders for additional time. (The Times)

At the time, APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru said the party expected its digitally verified membership to rise to between eight million and nine million after the registration exercise. (The Times)

The latest move suggests the party is seeking to keep its membership records current rather than rely entirely on the earlier database as political mobilisation intensifies.

That distinction could become important as parties prepare for the 2027 elections, when accurate grassroots records can support internal organisation, communication, mobilisation and the management of party activities across wards and local government areas.

The APC has also continued to invest in its digital infrastructure. In February, the party appointed Dr Umar Majigi as substantive Director of Information and Communication Technology, citing his role in developing and strengthening the party’s ICT architecture and implementing its membership e-registration system. The party’s shift towards digital membership management reflects a wider effort to modernise political organisation in a country where large membership structures have traditionally depended heavily on paper records and manually maintained registers.

A central objective of the new exercise is therefore data integrity.

By requiring existing members to validate their information, the APC is seeking to reduce inaccuracies and maintain a more dependable picture of its membership across the country. For new entrants, meanwhile, electronic registration provides a formal pathway into the party’s structure.

The timing also carries clear political significance.

The APC currently controls the Federal Government and several state governments, and its preparations for the 2027 elections are unfolding alongside intensified activity among opposition parties seeking to challenge its political dominance.

For the ruling party, a credible and accessible membership database could prove useful not only during election campaigns but also in organising congresses, internal elections, candidate selection processes and other party activities.

The exercise will also test how effectively the APC can translate its digital ambitions into participation at grassroots level, particularly in areas where access to reliable internet services and digital tools remains uneven.

For now, the party’s message is straightforward: existing members should validate their details, while eligible Nigerians interested in joining the APC are being invited to register from August 31.

As the 2027 political contest gradually takes shape, the renewed APC membership registration exercise is set to become an important part of the ruling party’s effort to strengthen its grassroots machinery and enter the election cycle with a more current and verifiable membership base.
