At the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, Atlético made a flying start as Pablo Barrios scored inside the opening minute to put the hosts ahead.
Manchester United struggled to recover, with Alejandro Grimaldo hitting the woodwork from a free-kick and Johnny Cardoso having a goal ruled out before half-time.
United’s hopes of mounting a comeback suffered another setback when defender Leny Yoro was sent off. Ademola Lookman then struck in the 79th minute to secure Atlético’s second goal and seal the victory.
The defeat extended Manchester United’s disappointing run to five matches without a win, leaving manager Michael Carrick under increasing pressure.
The English club had won only once in seven outings across all competitions, according to the supplied report.
Carrick, however, defended aspects of his team’s performance after the match.
“Tonight is a one-off game in judgement, it is the Champions League and a tough place to come. We are doing certain things OK,” he told Amazon Prime.
In Norway, Viking Stavanger came close to recording one of the competition’s biggest upsets after racing into a two-goal half-time lead against Bayern Munich.
Gianni Stensness headed Viking in front in the second minute before Peter Christiansen doubled the advantage, putting the Norwegian side in a commanding position against the German champions.
Bayern responded after the break through Harry Kane, who converted a penalty before heading in his eighth goal of the season in nine appearances across all competitions.
Luis Díaz subsequently completed the turnaround to put the visitors ahead.
The contest shifted again when Bayern forward Michael Olise received a second yellow card in the 74th minute for throwing the ball at an opponent.
The dismissal left Bayern to finish with 10 men and ruled the French international out of the following week’s home meeting with Arsenal.
Viking took advantage of their numerical superiority, with Herman Haugen heading home in the final minute to secure a memorable 3-3 draw.
Kane acknowledged Olise’s mistake after the match, saying the forward “will be gutted and he has to take responsibility for it”. He added that the incident was unfortunate given Bayern’s important upcoming fixtures.
Elsewhere, Arsenal produced a convincing performance at the Emirates Stadium, defeating Lille 3-0. Jurrien Timber, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka scored within an eight-minute spell in the second half to give the Premier League champions a comfortable victory.
Barcelona maintained their perfect record in the competition with a 4-1 win over Galatasaray in Istanbul. Aleksei Batrakov put the Turkish side ahead before João Cancelo equalised before the interval.
Lamine Yamal then helped Barcelona take control, setting up goals for Fermín López and Anthony Gordon before substitute Karim Adeyemi completed the scoring.
Club Brugge also delivered one of the night’s biggest surprises, defeating Inter Milan 4-3 at San Siro.
Nicolo Tresoldi scored a hat-trick, including a penalty, while Romeo Vermant added another goal for the Belgian visitors.
Lautaro Martínez scored twice for Inter, who suffered their second consecutive European defeat.
In other fixtures, Villarreal recovered from a goal down to beat Napoli 3-1, while RB Leipzig edged PSV Eindhoven 1-0 after Ivan Perišić missed a penalty for the Dutch side.
Sporting CP secured a 2-0 away win against Lens through goals from Luis Suárez and Issa Doumbia.
Azerbaijan’s Sabah also recorded a notable 2-0 victory over Slavia Prague in Baku, with Kaheem Parris and Joy-Lance Mickels scoring to give the club its first win in the league phase.
