The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four suspects over the alleged mob killing of Basit Kolade on Lagos Island, weeks before his scheduled wedding.

Kolade was allegedly attacked on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, after a traffic incident on Freeman Street, Lagos Island. He was travelling with his spouse in a black Lexus SUV from Ebute Metta towards Lagos Island when a motorcycle allegedly rammed into the vehicle from behind.

According to the police, the incident led to an argument between Kolade and the motorcycle rider. The vehicle later reversed and allegedly struck the motorcycle, causing the rider and the motorcycle to fall.

A crowd subsequently gathered at the scene, where some people allegedly attacked Kolade with dangerous weapons.

His spouse was reportedly rescued by women in the area, while Kolade was taken to Lagos Island General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

The police identified the four suspects as Khalid Rafiq, 20; Gafar Rahim, 21; Ibrahim Azeez, 33; and Samos Momoh, 21.

The command said efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest other people suspected of taking part in the attack.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, for further investigation and legal action.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, ordered investigators to identify everyone involved and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

Police described the incident as homicide and warned residents against resorting to mob action, stressing that no individual has the right to arrest, try or punish another person outside the law.

Kolade’s death has also drawn attention because he had reportedly returned to Nigeria from abroad ahead of his wedding later in September.

The police investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fatal attack and identify all those allegedly involved.
