Brentford humble Chelsea to go third

Brentford delivered one of the standout performances of the Premier League season on Friday night, thrashing Chelsea 3-0 to extend their unbeaten start and move into third place in the table.

After a goalless first half at the Gtech Community Stadium, the Bees overwhelmed Chelsea with three second-half goals that exposed the visitors’ persistent defensive vulnerabilities under manager Xabi Alonso.

The breakthrough arrived in the 61st minute when Jaidon Anthony rose highest to head home from a corner, punishing Chelsea’s fragile set-piece defending. Brentford doubled their advantage in the 83rd minute as Igor Thiago reacted quickest to convert after goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez could only parry Kevin Schade’s effort.

Substitute Fabio Carvalho completed the rout deep into stoppage time, finishing calmly from Schade’s low cross to seal Brentford’s first home league victory over Chelsea since 1938.

Chelsea created promising moments before the interval through Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Pedro Neto, but their inability to convert chances proved costly. Once Brentford took the lead, Alonso’s side struggled to recover as defensive errors and a lack of cohesion again undermined an otherwise talented attacking team.

The defeat leaves Chelsea with growing questions over their defensive organisation, having conceded heavily in the opening weeks of the campaign despite significant summer investment. Brentford, meanwhile, continue to impress with their disciplined structure and clinical finishing, strengthening their early credentials as one of the league’s surprise packages.

The victory lifts Brentford into third place in the Premier League standings, while Chelsea’s encouraging start under Alonso suffers its biggest setback yet.
