Arsenal, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and PSG headline a compelling league phase featuring several heavyweight European clashes

The Champions League draw on Thursday, August 27, 2026, has produced a compelling collection of fixtures for Europe’s leading clubs, with Arsenal, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City among the teams facing heavyweight opponents in the 2026/27 league phase.

The draw in Monaco paired all 36 participating clubs with eight opponents each, producing 144 matches across the opening phase of the competition. The league phase begins on September 8 and runs until January 27, 2027. ([UEFA.com][1])

Several of the pairings carry significant history, while others offer fresh storylines involving managers, former players and clubs seeking to establish themselves among Europe’s elite.

One of the most eye-catching fixtures will see Barcelona host Como, bringing Cesc Fabregas back to the Camp Nou in a Champions League campaign that represents another important step in his emerging managerial career.

Fabregas spent some of his most influential playing years at Barcelona and will now return to his former club in the dugout. Como will face a formidable challenge against a Barcelona side expected to compete strongly for progression.

Manchester United will also have a major test at Old Trafford when Bayern Munich arrive in a fixture steeped in European history.

The meeting recalls the dramatic 1999 Champions League final, when Manchester United scored twice in stoppage time to defeat Bayern and claim the trophy. The clubs also met in the 2023/24 group stage, with Bayern winning both encounters.

Bayern’s league-phase schedule is particularly demanding, with Arsenal and Atletico Madrid also among their opponents. ([UEFA.com][1])

Arsenal, meanwhile, have been handed two of the competition’s most prestigious opponents in Bayern and Real Madrid.

Mikel Arteta’s side will host Real Madrid before travelling to Munich to face Bayern.

Arsenal have never beaten Real Madrid in their four previous competitive meetings, according to the Premier League, adding another layer of intrigue to a fixture that could become one of the defining contests of the opening phase. ([Premier League][2])

Real Madrid’s own schedule includes a meeting with Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Spanish giants have enjoyed the stronger historical record against Inter, while the Italian club remain one of the most established names in European football.

Their encounter promises a classic contest between two sides with substantial Champions League pedigree.

Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona will renew one of the competition’s most memorable modern rivalries.

The clubs have produced extraordinary encounters over the years, including Barcelona’s famous comeback against PSG in 2017.

This latest meeting will feature another generation of elite attacking talent, with Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal and Raphinha among the players expected to attract attention.

For PSG, the fixture will form part of a demanding title defence after the French champions retained the trophy in May by beating Arsenal on penalties.

The holders will also face Manchester City during the league phase. ([Reuters][3])

Manchester City’s trip to Barcelona offers another fascinating storyline.

City will return to the Camp Nou, where they have yet to record a victory, while former City midfielder Rodri will face his old club after joining Barcelona during the summer.

The Catalan club have historically enjoyed the better record in their recent meetings, although City’s evolution under Pep Guardiola has transformed the balance of power in European football.

In Turkey, Liverpool face an intimidating trip to Fenerbahce.

The atmosphere at Fenerbahce’s home ground is likely to provide an additional test for Liverpool during a demanding league phase.

The Turkish side have several players with Premier League experience, while Liverpool will be expected to handle the pressure of playing away in one of Europe’s most passionate football environments.

Liverpool have also been paired with Atletico Madrid, creating another significant fixture for Andoni Iraola’s side.

The Spanish club have a reputation for making European matches intensely competitive, and the meeting will give Liverpool another stern examination. ([Reuters][3])

Atletico themselves face a challenging schedule, with Bayern Munich and Manchester United among their home opponents and Liverpool and Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt on the road.

Bodø/Glimt’s meeting with Atletico offers one of the more intriguing contrasts in the draw.

The Norwegian club have established themselves as an increasingly difficult opponent in European competition and will hope their home advantage can unsettle Diego Simeone’s experienced side.

The conditions in northern Norway could make the trip particularly uncomfortable for Atletico, adding an element beyond the technical battle on the pitch.

The league phase also features several other attractive contests, including Manchester City against Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool against Inter Milan and Barcelona against Manchester City.

The new format means every club will play eight matches, four at home and four away, against two opponents from each of the four seeding pots.

The top eight teams after the league phase will advance directly to the round of 16, while teams finishing ninth to 24th will enter a knockout play-off for the remaining eight places. ([UEFA.com][1])

The 2026/27 competition therefore promises a particularly unforgiving opening stage. Clubs can no longer rely on a traditional group-stage campaign against three opponents, with the expanded league phase bringing a broader range of elite opposition.

The Champions League draw has consequently produced more than a collection of glamorous fixtures.

For the leading contenders, the early encounters could shape their route through the competition and test their ability to maintain consistency against some of Europe’s strongest sides.

The league phase begins from September 8 to 10, with subsequent matchdays scheduled for October, November, December and January.

The knockout phase play-offs begin in February, while the final is scheduled for June 5, 2027, at Atletico Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium.
