Speaking in a live television interview on Fox News on Friday, Trump stated that a trusted informant — described as a minister and person of faith — brought the suspect to law enforcement.
“We have the person we think is the one we’re looking for,” Trump said. “He was turned in by someone very close to him, who brought him to a US Marshal. They drove directly to police headquarters, and he’s there now.”
The arrest comes just two days after the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University.
Kirk, 31, was delivering a campus address when he was shot from a rooftop by a sniper using a bolt-action rifle.
The shot struck him fatally in the neck, sending students and faculty into panic.
The Charlie Kirk shooting suspect is believed to have fired from roughly 200 yards away before escaping the scene on foot.
Authorities released footage showing a man in a dark baseball cap and Converse trainers running across a rooftop and later disappearing into nearby woods, where the suspected weapon was recovered.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox has already indicated that the state will pursue the death penalty should the suspect be convicted.
The FBI and over 20 law enforcement agencies were involved in the intensive search, which captured national attention.
Kirk’s death has sent shockwaves across conservative circles, with vigils held in his honour and tributes pouring in across social media.
Supporters hailed him as a “martyr for free speech,” while others called for calm amid political tensions.
Despite Trump’s confident declaration, federal authorities have not yet publicly confirmed the identity of the person in custody.
Some reports suggest a 22-year-old Utah man, but law enforcement sources remain cautious, noting that investigations are still ongoing.
This latest development in the high-profile case has added emotional intensity to an already politically charged climate in the US, as public discourse continues to wrestle with gun violence, freedom of speech, and ideological extremism.
