Charlie Kirk shooting at Utah Valley University on Wednesday left the Turning Point USA cofounder and CEO in critical condition, igniting fresh concerns over rising political violence in the United States.

Witnesses said Kirk was addressing a large outdoor audience when a sudden crack believed to be a gunshot rang out.
Video circulating online showed him reaching for his neck before collapsing, sending panicked attendees scrambling for safety.
Turning Point USA confirmed the shooting in a statement. “We are confirming that he was shot and we are praying for Charlie,” said Aubrey Laitsch, the group’s public relations manager.
University officials initially reported that a suspect had been taken into custody, though later clarified that the person was not the shooter. FBI Director Kash Patel said federal agents were swiftly deployed.
The 30-year-old conservative activist, known for championing youth support for Donald Trump, was speaking at a debate hosted by his organisation.
The event had stirred debate on campus, with an online petition opposing his appearance gathering nearly 1,000 signatures.
Former congressman Jason Chaffetz, present at the event, told Fox News he heard a single shot and saw Kirk fall. “It seemed like it was a close shot,” Chaffetz said, adding that while Kirk had some security, “it was not enough.”
Political figures reacted quickly. Trump posted on Truth Social: “We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!”
The shooting adds to a troubling surge of political violence nationwide, which has included assassinations, arson, and even the shooting of Trump during a campaign rally last year.

Authorities have not yet released further details on the shooter or motive, but the incident has already intensified debate about security at political events and the fragile state of public discourse in the US.
