A yet to be identified owner of Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and member was recently attacked within the premises of Ikoyi Golf Club, while the security guards stationed at the club were overpowered and assaulted.

According to a source, the breach occurred at the Golf section car park on May 28, 2023 at around 4am in morning when the member drove alone for an early morning round of golf.

Few minutes after, four fully armed men, who claimed to be MOPOL officers, walked into the golf car park. They allegedly informed the security that they wanted to know the location of their colleagues within the Club premises.

“Upon realising that there were no armed officers on the premises, they immediately overpowered, harassed and physically assaulted the security guards with a barrage of slaps. They then rounded them up, threatened to shoot, and marshaled them to the golf bag entrance where they were held hostage,” the source claimed.

It was reported that while one of them kept watch on the hostages, the rest sprang into action and started vandalising the member’s Toyota Prado. They sacked the vehicle and removed some components from it.

After, these armed robbers sped off in a get-away Honda civic car parked outside the perimeter fence of the golf section.

In a statement by the management of the club, the police authorities were immediately informed and investigation into the horrible incident has commenced upon reviewing CCTV footage.

The elite club assured its members that such occurrence will not happen again as tighter security measures have been embarked upon.

“The Security Sub Committee is also reviewing the details of this incident, with a view to propose their recommendations to the General Committee.

“The General Committee (GC) has deliberated on the incident and awaits the Security Sub Committee’s report (comprising that of the Police). The GC has directed that, with immediate effect, the Golf, Tennis and Main entrance gates would only be open from 6.a.m, and not earlier,” the management said.

The Ikoyi Club was established as a European club in 1938 in Ikoyi, Lagos. It was originally converted from a prison to a rest house and occupies approximately 456 acres of land.

In the subsequent years, the European Club merged with the Lagos Golf Club. Besides the golf course, Ikoyi Club also has many sports and relaxation amenities which provide first class facilities for members and their families.

Today, the club has grown from its exclusively European membership to modern day membership of diverse nationalities with some of Nigeria’s most aristocratic families being members.
