Major streets are deserted in Osogbo, Osun State capital, on Saturday as residents stayed at home in fear of attack by individuals calling for Nigeria to break up to pave way for Yoruba nation.

Policemen have deployed to strategic locations to monitor processions in the city to prevent criminals hijacking the June 12 protest rallies.

Shops and business centres were shut and major often-busy stayed empty as only few vehicles were seen on the roads.

Commercial and business activities were paralysed as residents deserted their shops and offices.

The Chairman of Osun Coalition of Civil Society Groups in the state, Comrade Waheed Lawal said June 12 in which Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola was elected as President has been turned to celebration date since President Muhammadu Buhari made it Democracy Day.

While commending Buhari for declaring June 12 as Democracy Day, Lawal urged the President to provide security and prioritise people’s welfare.

After the rally, the activists and students converged at an event centre for Democracy Day lecture.

The lecture which was delivered by Nigeria former Ambassador to Philippine, Dr Yemi Faronbi was attended by dignitaries including the State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola.

Faronbi said it was sad that since 1993, Nigeria could not conduct an election that would be as peaceful as the June 12 election.

The pioneer President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Taiwo Sunmonu, who chaired the event, highlighted the sacrifices of late Moshood Kashmawo Abiola and lauded President Buhari for recognising June 12 as Democracy Day.
