Dutch League: Goalkeeper scores twice in historic 2-2 draw

Telstar goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr made Dutch League history on Sunday, September 6, 2026, scoring twice from the penalty spot to rescue a dramatic 2-2 draw against Cambuur in the Eredivisie in the Netherlands.

The 31-year-old, son of former Netherlands defender and manager Ronald Koeman, produced a remarkable comeback after Telstar were reduced to 10 men in the 22nd minute.

Cambuur took advantage of the extra man after the break, scoring twice to establish a 2-0 lead and put Telstar under serious pressure.

Rafik El Arguioui opened the scoring in the 53rd minute before Nicolas Binder doubled Cambuur’s advantage seven minutes later.

Koeman Jr gave Telstar renewed hope when he converted a penalty in the 63rd minute, reducing the deficit to 2-1.

The drama reached its peak deep into stoppage time. Telstar were awarded another penalty in the 101st minute, and Koeman Jr once again stepped forward.

The goalkeeper held his nerve to score his second penalty of the night and complete an extraordinary comeback.

The equaliser made Koeman Jr the first goalkeeper to score twice in a single Eredivisie match, according to reports from BBC Sport.

The achievement was particularly remarkable because Telstar had spent more than an hour with 10 players following the early dismissal.

Koeman Jr’s penalty-taking ability is not entirely new. He previously scored a decisive spot-kick against FC Volendam in May, helping Telstar secure their place in the Eredivisie.

His latest performance, however, has taken that reputation to another level.

“I can just take a good penalty and I’m confident, so there’s no doubt,” Koeman Jr said after the match.

The result also adds another unusual chapter to the footballing family of Ronald Koeman. Koeman Jr’s father is one of the most recognisable figures in Dutch football, having enjoyed a distinguished playing career before managing the Netherlands national team.

Ronald Koeman resigned as Netherlands manager in June following the team’s last-32 World Cup exit against Morocco.

For Telstar, the draw was more than an entertaining result. A side that appeared destined for defeat after going two goals down and losing a player instead produced a spirited response.

For Koeman Jr, it was an unforgettable night that placed his name in the Eredivisie record books.

The Dutch League goalkeeper’s two penalties provided Telstar with a precious point and transformed what had looked like a disappointing evening into one of the most remarkable matches of the club’s season.
