BREAKING: FG declares Tuesday holiday for Eid ul Mawlid

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday across Nigeria to mark Eid ul Mawlid, with Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo urging Nigerians to reflect on the values associated with the life of Prophet Muhammad.

The announcement was made in Abuja on Friday, August 21, 2026, in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Federal Government. The declaration confirms Tuesday as a non-working day for the national observance.

Eid ul Mawlid commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad and is observed as a public holiday in Nigeria. The 2026 observance falls on Tuesday, August 25.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslim faithful in Nigeria and across the diaspora, while encouraging citizens to use the occasion for reflection and acts that strengthen peaceful coexistence.

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” Tunji-Ojo said.

The minister stressed that those values should not be viewed solely through a religious lens, arguing that they remain relevant to Nigeria’s wider social and national life.

“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them,” he said.

The Federal Government also used the announcement to appeal for continued peace and national cohesion at a time when citizens face a range of economic and social pressures.

Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to pray for peace and unity and to celebrate the occasion with restraint and mutual respect.

The minister further reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property and sustaining peace across the country.

The Federal Government has similarly used previous religious holidays to encourage Nigerians to embrace values such as compassion, sacrifice, tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

In 2025, for example, the government declared September 5 a public holiday for Eid ul Mawlid and called on citizens to reflect on peace, love, humility and compassion.

The pattern continued during the 2026 Eid ul Adha celebration, when the government declared May 27 and 28 public holidays and called for prayer, sober reflection and national unity.

The August 25 declaration gives workers and families a nationwide day away from normal work commitments as Muslims mark the occasion.

For many communities, Eid ul Mawlid is an opportunity for religious gatherings, prayers, reflection and expressions of goodwill.

The government has encouraged citizens to ensure that celebrations remain peaceful and respectful.

The holiday also forms part of Nigeria’s established calendar of public observances. Available 2026 holiday records list August 25 as the country’s Eid ul Mawlid public holiday.

With the announcement, the Federal Government is placing particular emphasis on the broader human values associated with the celebration, including compassion, humility, service and mutual respect.

For Tunji-Ojo and the Ministry of Interior, the message extends beyond the one-day break.

The government hopes the occasion can provide a meaningful opportunity for Nigerians of different faiths and backgrounds to reflect on the importance of peaceful coexistence and a more united society.
