Breaking: Nigeria Labour Congress general secretary dies

thenacre-campaign

Nigeria’s organised labour movement was thrown into mourning on Thursday, August 27, 2026, after Nigeria Labour Congress General Secretary Emmanuel Okechukwu Ugboaja died at the age of 60 following a prolonged illness, with NLC President Joe Ajaero informing members of the Congress’ National Executive Council during a meeting in Enugu.

Details of the circumstances surrounding the death remained limited at the time of reporting. Vanguard reported that Ajaero conveyed the news after receiving a letter from Ugboaja’s family.

Ugboaja’s death brings to an end a career in trade unionism that spanned more than three decades and established him as one of the notable legal and labour voices within Nigeria’s workers’ movement.

Born on May 15, 1966, Ugboaja studied law at the University of Calabar and graduated in 1987.

He initially spent four years in private legal practice before moving into full-time trade union work in 1993.

His move into organised labour was historic. NLC records and contemporary reports described Ugboaja as the first Nigerian lawyer to work full-time for a trade union.

He joined the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Products Employees, where he eventually became General Secretary between 2000 and 2005.

Ugboaja later broadened his work beyond trade union administration. From 2006 to 2009, he served as Coordinator of Advocacy and Mobilisation at the Alliance for Credible Elections, a civil society organisation focused on electoral matters.

He returned to the NLC Secretariat in 2009 and rose through its leadership structure, eventually becoming Principal Assistant General Secretary and Head of Industrial Relations and Organising.

His experience also took him into national constitutional and political reform discussions.

Ugboaja participated as a delegate at the 2005 Political and Constitutional Reform Conference convened under former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the 2014 National Conference under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

In August 2019, the NLC selected Ugboaja to succeed Peter Ozo-Eson as General Secretary. His appointment was subsequently approved by the union’s National Executive Council, following a competitive selection process involving four candidates.

Ugboaja formally assumed office in September 2019 following Ozo-Eson’s retirement.

His tenure placed him at the centre of negotiations and disputes involving workers’ wages, labour rights and relations between organised labour and government.

The NLC’s official publications also continued to identify Ugboaja as General Secretary during the leadership of Joe Ajaero, reflecting his prominent role in the Congress’ national affairs.

His passing comes at a significant moment for organised labour, which continues to play a prominent role in national debates over workers’ welfare, wages and the cost of living.

For colleagues and members of the labour movement, the loss is also the departure of a figure whose career combined legal training with a long commitment to trade union organisation.

The Emmanuel Ugboaja death leaves the NLC without a veteran administrator who spent more than 30 years navigating the often difficult intersection of workers’ rights, industrial relations and national policy.

Further details about his funeral arrangements and tributes from the labour movement are expected from the family and the NLC.
