A crisis is brewing at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso campus over the alleged humiliation of a female Muslim student.
According to reports on Thursday, the Dean of the Faculty of Nursing reportedly ridiculed a female Muslim student whose identity has not been revealed for wearing a hijab (a veil usually worn by female Muslims to cover their head).
According to a video, the event happened on Wednesday when the board of the Open and Distance Learning Programme addressed the newly enrolled nursing students.
It was gathered that the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Ajibade Lawal while addressing the students asked one of the students who was wearing a Hijab to leave the class.
Lawal previously stated that scrubs are the only acceptable uniform for student nurses.
He insisted that no other type of clothing be worn on top of or below the scrub.
The Dean’s move infuriated the students, who pledged to disrupt academic activity at the university today.
The students who demanded that Lawal apologize publicly regarded the lecturer’s actions as a breach of the rights of female Muslim pupils.
As of Thursday morning, we learned that students from the school are now demonstrating outside the university’s entrance.
When contacted, LAUTECH’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Akin Fadeyi, verified the event.
Fadeyi, in a statement made available on Thursday morning, noted that the case was being handled by the university management.
“This is to alert stakeholders that the tragic circumstances of yesterday involving Professor Bayo Lawal Ajibade and a specific Muslim woman are being addressed by Management of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Oyo State,” he added.
“Ag. Vice-Chancellor Professor Mojeed Olaide Liasu has already directed the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Adeyemi, to lead a high-powered probe into the problem.”
“While a result, management is pleading with students in particular to keep the peace as they go about their tasks on University grounds in order for the inquiry to continue.”
“The Ag. Vice-Chancellor has told me that no one will be protected.”
