Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah on Monday, 10 August 2026, visited the Department of State Services headquarters in Enugu after DSS operatives, Nigerian Army personnel, police officers and Enugu State Forest Guards arrested three suspected members of a kidnapping gang allegedly linked to the 2 August attack on St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Inoyi-Affa, Udi Local Government Area, Enugu State.

The operation has brought a measure of relief to a community still dealing with the shock of the attack, in which three people were abducted.

Two of the victims, seminarian Lawrence Igbo and Emmanuel Onwudi, have since regained their freedom, according to the Enugu State Government.

The government said the two freed victims subsequently identified the three arrested suspects as the men who abducted them.

The claim remains an allegation, with the suspects yet to face trial and establish their innocence or guilt before a court.

The joint operation also resulted in the death of one suspected kidnapper during an exchange of gunfire with security personnel. Four AK-47 rifles and ammunition were recovered, according to the authorities.

The development was disclosed after Governor Mbah inspected the suspects at the state DSS headquarters. The governor was represented during the visit by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia.

Professor Onyia described the operation as evidence of the state’s determination to pursue those responsible for violent crime, while stressing that security agencies would continue searching for other members of the alleged gang.

“There was one fatality in this process. It was one of the criminals that died in the process of apprehending them,” Onyia said.

The Secretary to the State Government also issued a pointed warning to people who may provide information, shelter or other assistance to criminal groups operating in the state.

“We made it very clear that if criminality becomes your venture, Enugu State is not the location to do that business,” he said.

For the families of the abducted victims, the recovery of Lawrence Igbo and Emmanuel Onwudi is arguably the most significant part of the development.

Their release shifts attention from the immediate fear generated by the church attack to the longer process of establishing what happened and holding those responsible to account.

The August 2 incident also underlines the continuing security pressures facing parts of Enugu State.

The state police have previously reported extensive operations against kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent crimes, including the rescue of 12 kidnapped victims and the arrest of 92 suspects in a one-month period in 2023.

That operation also produced substantial weapons recoveries, including four AK-47 rifles, alongside other firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

Those earlier figures do not relate to the latest church attack, but they provide useful context for the security challenge confronting the state and the authorities’ reliance on intelligence-led and multi-agency operations.

The current operation similarly involved several security bodies working together.

The participation of the DSS, Army, Police and Enugu State Forest Guard reflects the increasingly collaborative approach being used to pursue armed criminal networks in difficult terrain.

For Governor Mbah’s administration, the arrests also offer an opportunity to demonstrate that the state’s security investment can produce tangible results.

Onyia said the government was intentionally strengthening its security architecture and would continue working with federal and state security agencies.

He warned that the investigation was not over and that people suspected of supporting the alleged criminal network could also face prosecution.

The authorities have not publicly identified the three arrested suspects by name, nor have they disclosed the identity or current status of the third person abducted during the 2 August incident in the material available so far.

That missing detail leaves important questions unanswered, including the full circumstances of the attack, the precise role allegedly played by each suspect and whether additional arrests will follow.

For now, the recovery of two abductees and the seizure of four AK-47 rifles mark a significant development in the aftermath of the Inoyi-Affa attack.
