In a recent meeting with the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, shared the rationale behind his diplomatic engagement amidst the ongoing Hamas conflict in the Middle East. The meeting has sparked curiosity and speculation, given Nigeria’s history of supporting the Palestinian cause.

Minister Nyesom Wike clarified that his meeting with the Israeli Ambassador was driven by the need to promote peace, dialogue, and to discuss potential collaboration in various areas of mutual interest between Nigeria and Israel. He emphasized that Nigeria has always supported the Palestinian cause but at the same time recognizes Israel’s right to exist and defend its citizens.

Wike stated, “My primary concern is to ensure that the conflict does not escalate and spill over into Nigeria. Nigeria is home to a diverse group of people, and it’s crucial to maintain peace within our borders. Engaging with various stakeholders, including the Israeli government, is part of our commitment to global peace.”

The Minister further highlighted that Nigeria has a history of championing the Palestinian cause, but it’s important to maintain diplomatic relations with all countries involved in the conflict. This approach aligns with Nigeria’s foreign policy of non-alignment and constructive engagement on the international stage.

Wike also expressed interest in exploring potential collaborations between Nigeria and Israel in areas such as agriculture, technology, and security. He mentioned that the meeting with the Israeli Ambassador provided an opportunity to discuss these potential partnerships that could benefit both nations.

The meeting between Minister Wike and the Israeli Ambassador serves as a reminder of the complexity of international diplomacy, where nations often balance their historic positions with the need for peaceful engagement with multiple stakeholders. It underscores the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving conflicts, even in regions far from Nigeria.

As the situation in the Middle East continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement may influence the ongoing Hamas conflict and contribute to peace and stability in the region.
