Rhodes-Vivour’s message, shared on his social media handle, underscored the disconnect between the government’s increased revenue and the plight of citizens struggling to afford basic necessities.
He lambasted both the federal and Lagos state governments for their apparent apathy towards the suffering of the people, labeling their inaction as “grossly irresponsible” and indicative of “insensitivity and moral corruption.”
He outlined a series of urgent measures that he believes the government should immediately implement.
Firstly, he called for the opening of borders to allow for the importation of food, a move intended to drive down prices and alleviate shortages while efforts to bolster local production are underway.
Additionally, Rhodes-Vivour emphasized the importance of making critical investments in public transportation networks to reduce the cost of transportation, which often exacerbates the burden on already struggling citizens. He argued that accessible and affordable transportation options are essential for ensuring that all citizens can access food and other necessities.
Furthermore, Rhodes-Vivour urged immediate government intervention to lower the prices of essential drugs, particularly inhalers and life-saving treatments.
He wrote:
It is grossly irresponsible for a government that now enjoys higher revenue to watch its people beg for food. This is the height of insensitivity and moral corruption. Both the federal government and the Lagos state government have let the people down.
We need to immediately:
– Open our borders to allow food to come in and crash prices while we work on building local production.
– Make critical investments in public transportation networks to bring down the cost of transportation.
– Immediate intervention in bringing the prices of drugs down, especially inhalers and treatments that can mean life or death. No government should be this bereft of ideas and at the same time lacking in empathy and compassion whilst getting flown on the nations jet to get international health care.
