Gunmen killed All Progressives Congress chairman in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Ishaq Yunusa, on Thursday 27 August 2026 and abducted another person travelling in his car.
Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer ASP Afusat Saliu confirmed the attack on Friday in Lokoja.

She said it happened at about 5pm on the Itobe-Ochadamu Expressway, near Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area. Armed men came out of the bush and opened fire on motorists.
A blue Toyota Corolla, registration GWA 636 CH, was later found abandoned on the highway. “The driver, identified as Hon. Ishaq Yunusa, was found dead in the vehicle, while another occupant was taken into the bush by the assailants,” ASP Afusat Saliu said.
The body was taken to Grimard Hospital, Anyigba, for an autopsy. Police and other agencies were searching the forest for the missing passenger and for those who carried out the ambush.
Commissioner of Police Naziru Bello Kankarofi ordered sustained patrols on that corridor and said the attackers must be brought to justice.
The command asked drivers and residents to stay alert and report anything unusual. It promised further updates.
The killing fits a wider pattern on Kogi roads. Police recently said they had rescued 11 National Youth Service Corps members after a separate abduction in the state.
SBM Intelligence’s latest kidnap review listed Kogi among the harder-hit states, with hundreds of victims over the year to June 2026.

No group has claimed the Dekina attack. Until the second occupant is found, the case is both a murder inquiry and a rescue.
