The Nigerian Army on 2 August 2026 recovered the remains of Chief Ibe Anyadu, a community leader from Aggah Community in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State, after troops were led to a shallow grave in Umudike Forest by a suspected member of a criminal gang linked to his murder.

The recovery operation was carried out by troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade under Operation UDO KA, as part of the wider Operation EASTERN SANITY II campaign aimed at tackling violent criminal networks in Nigeria’s South-East region.

Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Public Relations at the Nigerian Army’s 82 Division, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday, 3 August 2026.

The military said the discovery followed the arrest of suspects allegedly involved in the killing of a Nigerian Army soldier and the recovery of stolen service weapons.

One of the arrested suspects reportedly confessed to participating in Chief Anyadu’s murder and agreed to guide troops to the location where the remains were buried.

The suspect subsequently took soldiers to the burial site inside Umudike Forest, described by the Army as one of the criminal group’s known camps.

The remains of the community leader were then exhumed and handed over for a dignified burial process.

The operation has provided a significant moment of closure for Chief Anyadu’s family and members of the Aggah and Umudike communities, who had been seeking answers following his death.

The exhumation was conducted in the presence of the deceased’s relatives, local vigilante personnel from Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area, and representatives of both communities.

The family provided a coffin and ambulance to support the final arrangements in line with local customs and traditions.

“The exhumation was conducted in the presence of the deceased’s family members, vigilante personnel from Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area, and representatives of Aggah and Umudike communities,” Ayeni stated, adding that the family ensured the remains received a respectful farewell.

Chief Anyadu’s death was linked by the Army to suspected criminal elements operating from Umudike Forest, an area security agencies have identified as a hideout for armed groups involved in violent activities.

The Commander of Joint Task Force South-East, Operation UDO KA, Major General Oluremi Ayobami Fadairo, expressed sympathy to the late community leader’s family and assured residents that those responsible would face prosecution.

“Justice will be served over the murder of the community leader as the suspects will be prosecuted in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Fadairo said.

The Army said the recovery of the Imo leader’s remains case reflects its ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and restore confidence among communities affected by insecurity.

Operation UDO KA has continued to focus on improving security across the South-East through military operations, intelligence gathering, and cooperation with local communities.

Security authorities have also urged residents to provide timely and credible information that could assist investigations and support efforts to prevent further attacks.
