Lionel Andrés Messi, Argentina captain, and several global football stars have officially stepped away from international duty following the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with retirement confirmations spanning Europe, Africa, Asia and South America as of September 16, 2026.

The wave of departures, compiled in the international football retirement list 2026, reflects a generational shift in world football, with long-serving icons and recent champions bringing their national team careers to an end after the tournament cycle.

Lionel Messi, aged 39, remains Argentina’s record appearance-maker with 207 caps and 125 goals, and is set for a farewell international appearance against Benin in Buenos Aires on 6 October in a match organised by the Argentina Football Association. Speaking after Argentina’s World Cup campaign, Messi said, “I gave everything for my country. Wearing this shirt has been the greatest honour of my career.”

Brazilian forward Neymar also confirmed his exit from international football following Brazil’s World Cup elimination, ending a national team career that began in 2010 and included four World Cup appearances. Neymar stated, “It is not an easy decision, but I feel I have reached the end of this chapter with Brazil.”

Colombia’s James Rodríguez, 35, announced his retirement on 15 September 2026 after a career that included 131 caps, 43 assists and a defining 2014 World Cup Golden Boot campaign that elevated him to global prominence.

Germany’s Manuel Neuer, aged 40, concluded his international journey after returning for the 2026 World Cup, closing a career highlighted by the 2014 World Cup triumph and over a decade as Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Mexico’s Guillermo Ochoa also stepped away following another World Cup appearance, ending one of the most enduring international careers in modern CONCACAF football.

In Africa, Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez retired after the tournament, having scored twice in his final World Cup appearance, while Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy confirmed his departure after 59 caps and an Africa Cup of Nations triumph in 2021.

Ghana forward Iñaki Williams also announced his international retirement following the Black Stars’ Round of 32 exit, ending a four-year spell at international level.

Bosnia and Herzegovina striker Edin Džeko confirmed he will retire after a final UEFA Nations League appearance against Sweden, closing a career that made him his nation’s record scorer and most-capped player.

Côte d’Ivoire midfielder Seko Fofana, aged 31, completed the list of notable exits, retiring after 34 appearances and an Africa Cup of Nations title on home soil in 2024.

Football analysts have described the widespread retirements as a “power shift moment” in international football, marking the end of a highly experienced generation that shaped multiple World Cups and continental tournaments.

The international football retirement list 2026 underscores both the physical demands of modern football and the emotional toll of long international careers, as federations now prepare for a transition into younger squads ahead of upcoming qualification cycles.
