Professor claims Yoruba traditions quietly shaped modern Christian, Muslim worship

A Nigerian professor has sparked discussions on Yoruba culture and religion after arguing that indigenous Yoruba customs, once criticised by some early missionaries, have continued to influence aspects of modern religious expression.

The scholar made the remarks while discussing the relationship between Isese, the Yoruba traditional belief system, and contemporary religious practices.

According to the professor, early missionaries often portrayed indigenous practices negatively, but elements of Yoruba culture later found their way into the worship styles and expressions of some Christian and Muslim communities.

The professor argued that cultural practices, language, music and traditional symbols have remained part of the wider Yoruba identity despite changes brought by different religious movements.

“Missionaries demonised Isese, yet Christians and Muslims later adopted indigenous Yoruba customs into their worship,” the professor said.

The scholar also referenced the work of some religious figures and musicians, including Evangelist Bola Are, suggesting that Yoruba cultural influences have appeared in gospel music and other forms of religious expression.

The comments have generated conversations among cultural commentators and religious observers, with some highlighting the importance of preserving indigenous heritage while practising modern faith.

Supporters of the argument say many societies around the world have blended traditional cultural elements with organised religions over time, creating unique expressions of identity and worship.

However, others maintain that religious practices should be distinguished from cultural traditions and that the adoption of certain cultural elements does not necessarily represent acceptance of traditional beliefs.

The discussion comes amid renewed interest in Yoruba heritage, with Isese gaining increased attention among cultural advocates seeking to preserve indigenous languages, festivals, arts and traditions.

The debate reflects a broader conversation in Nigeria about the relationship between ancestral customs, religion and evolving cultural identities.
