The command orders a discreet investigation after residents accused the divisional officer of arbitrary arrests, unlawful detention and bail extortion

The Adamawa State Police Command has ordered a Jambutu DPO investigation following allegations of arbitrary arrests, unlawful detention and bail extortion involving the Divisional Police Officer of Jambutu Division.

The command announced the decision on Saturday through a statement issued by its Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, after a publication raised concerns over the conduct of the divisional officer.

The report, titled “Adamawa Residents Demand Removal of Jambutu DPO Over Alleged Arbitrary Arrests, Bail Extortion”, prompted the command to direct the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Hamzat Tambai, to conduct a thorough and discreet investigation.

The police said the allegations were being treated seriously and stressed that misconduct would not be tolerated within the command.

“The Command takes the allegations seriously and wishes to state categorically that it does not condone arbitrary arrests, unlawful detention, extortion, or any form of professional misconduct by its personnel,” the statement said.

The command also used the development to clarify its position on bail, stressing that members of the public should not be required to make payments before securing the release of suspects who are entitled to bail.

“Bail is free, and no police officer is authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public as a condition for granting bail,” the command said.

The clarification comes amid longstanding public concerns in Nigeria over allegations of improper detention and demands for money during police bail processes.

The latest investigation provides an opportunity for the command to establish whether the allegations against the Jambutu DPO are substantiated.

The police urged anyone with information concerning the claims to come forward with specific details and any available evidence that could assist investigators.

Such information, the command said, could be submitted to the SCID headquarters in Yola or the nearest police formation.

The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine whether disciplinary or other appropriate action is warranted.

For now, the command has reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability and respect for citizens’ rights, while making clear that the allegations remain subject to investigation.
