Three victims were found unconscious after the residential building collapsed in Dan Dishe, Fagge LGA, in the early hours of Saturday

The Kano State Fire Service rescued 16 people alive after a residential building collapsed at Dan Dishe, Kwanar Yashi, in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State, in the early hours of Saturday, August 8, 2026.

Three of the rescued victims were unconscious when emergency responders reached the scene, according to the Kano State Fire Service Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi.

Abdullahi said the service received an emergency call at about 4:32am from Aminu Sani Warure, one of its staff members, reporting the collapse.

Responding to the alert, firefighters from the service headquarters were immediately deployed to the area.

When the rescue team arrived, the responders found that a residential structure measuring approximately 20 by 30 feet had collapsed.

The rescue operation resulted in all 16 occupants being brought out alive, including the three people who were found unconscious.

The victims were subsequently handed over to Usman Ibrahim, identified by the Fire Service as their father’s brother, for further necessary attention.

The successful rescue provided a measure of relief after the sudden collapse, although the condition of the three unconscious victims was not immediately disclosed.

“The Kano State Fire Service wishes to inform the general public at about 4:32 am today, Saturday, 8 August 2026, the Service’s Emergency Response Unit received an emergency call,” Abdullahi said in the statement.

The Fire Service has not established what caused the building to collapse.

An investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether structural or environmental factors contributed to the failure.

The latest Kano building collapse also comes against a wider backdrop of recurring concerns about building safety in the state and across Nigeria.

Fagge Local Government Area has experienced building collapses in previous years.

In July 2025, a building collapsed in Abedi Sabon Gari, Fagge, leaving four people dead and seven injured, according to the National Emergency Management Agency. Search and rescue personnel were deployed following reports that several people were trapped.

In September 2024, the Federal Government also ordered an investigation into a separate two-storey building collapse at Noman’s Land Quarters in Fagge.

The then Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, described the recurrence of building collapses as a serious concern and called for stronger enforcement of building codes and regulations.

Those earlier incidents are separate from Saturday’s collapse and there is no evidence at this stage linking them to the Dan Dishe incident.

The Kano State Fire Service urged residents to take necessary safety precautions, particularly during the rainy season, when heavy rainfall can place additional pressure on vulnerable structures and surrounding ground conditions.

For the families of those rescued, the immediate priority remains the wellbeing of the victims, particularly the three people who were unconscious after being brought out of the collapsed building.

The ongoing investigation is expected to establish what caused the structure to fail and whether any safety or construction standards were breached.

Until the findings are released, officials have not attributed responsibility for the collapse to any individual or organisation.

The incident once again highlights the importance of timely emergency response and adherence to building safety requirements, particularly in densely populated urban communities where structural failures can quickly put multiple lives at risk.
