Katsina confirms tragic death of retired General Rabe Abubakar in bandit captivity, vows stronger action against insecurity

The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of bandits, describing the incident as a deeply tragic loss to the state and the nation.

In a statement issued on Friday, the government said the retired senior military officer died despite sustained efforts by security agencies and state authorities to secure his release from captivity.

Katsina Confirms Tragic Death Retired General following what officials described as a “dark moment” for the state, amid ongoing concerns over insecurity and kidnapping in parts of northern Nigeria.

According to the statement, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed profound sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the family of the deceased.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity.

Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” the statement said.

The government noted that the late retired General died from complications related to diabetes and hypertension while being held by his abductors.

Officials said the incident represents not only a personal loss to the family but also a significant national tragedy, given the deceased’s service to the country in the military.

The state government described the development as a stark reminder of the security challenges confronting communities and the urgent need for stronger collaboration between federal and state authorities in addressing banditry.

Authorities reiterated their commitment to intensifying operations against criminal groups responsible for kidnappings and violent attacks across Katsina State and neighbouring regions.

They assured residents that efforts to dismantle armed networks and strengthen public safety would continue in partnership with federal security agencies.

The government also extended condolences to the bereaved family, praying for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul and urging citizens to remain resilient in the face of ongoing security challenges.

The incident adds to growing concern over the persistence of banditry in north-west Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom and violent raids on communities have continued to disrupt civilian life and strain security resources.
