Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo urges men to avoid financially dependent partners, calling for higher standards and shared responsibility in marriage

Relationship coach and lead pastor of David’s Christian Centre, Kingsley Okonkwo, has urged men to raise their standards in relationships and avoid marrying women who are financially dependent.

Okonkwo made the remarks in a series of posts on social media, where he argued that many men are increasingly losing interest in marriage because they see it as a financial burden rather than a balanced partnership.

“Men, it’s high time we start having standards as well. You guys are too used to women who are liabilities; that’s why less and less men desire marriage. They see it as a burden,” Okonkwo wrote.

The pastor further advised men to prioritise financially independent partners, suggesting that such expectations could encourage more women to pursue careers and economic stability.

“Men set standards like you won’t marry broke women too, that you want a partner and not a dependent. Maybe it will make more women work and not see marriage and dating as a poverty alleviation scheme,” he added.

Okonkwo also criticised the expectation that men should shoulder all financial responsibilities in marriage, describing the idea as both unbiblical and harmful to society.

“The current system is not only unbiblical but also damaging society. Women brazenly insist on rich men. I think we should also insist on working women that will contribute,” he said.

The relationship coach also cautioned men against exploiting financially vulnerable women, warning that such behaviour often stems from fragile egos and can create unhealthy power dynamics in relationships.

According to him, genuine partnerships thrive when both individuals recognise their value and develop their abilities rather than relying on financial dependence.
