The attack on Lata Nna community in Patigi Local Government Area forced residents to flee into surrounding bushes as fears of further casualties grew

A suspected bandit attack on Lata Nna community in Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State on Sunday, August 2, 2026, left a woman dead, another resident abducted and villagers fleeing into nearby bushes as armed assailants reportedly opened fire in the rural community.

The Kwara bandit attack was still unfolding when residents spoke to local media, with fears that the number of casualties could rise as people searched for those who may have been caught in the assault.

Several residents said the attackers stormed the community heavily armed and began shooting, sending villagers running for safety. Some reportedly escaped into surrounding bushes and other locations they considered safer.

One resident told SaharaReporters: “Lata Nna is currently under attack right now by bandits.”

Another resident said the attackers had killed villagers in an area behind the community, although the exact number of victims remained unclear.

“Some people were killed. The victims were at the back of the village. They were just killed there,” the resident said, adding that one woman had been confirmed dead after she went behind the village to fetch firewood.

The resident said the woman was a Nupe villager and that community members were still searching the area to determine whether there were additional victims.

The latest attack also comes barely a day after a resident, identified as Mohammed Abubakar Ndakpada Lata, was reportedly abducted while returning from his farm. His captors were said to have demanded a ransom of N100 million for his release.

The back-to-back incidents have heightened anxiety in the community, where residents have raised concerns about the lack of a permanent security presence.

A resident said the latest assault caught villagers by surprise after gunfire was heard suddenly.

“I was in the town when I suddenly heard gunshots. I was wondering what was happening because there is no security presence in our village,” the resident said.

According to the account, local vigilantes responded after the attack began, but the assailants had already killed at least one person before the vigilantes reached the area. The resident also said the attackers appeared to be carrying more sophisticated firearms rather than locally made weapons.

There was no immediate official statement from the Kwara State Police Command confirming the reported death, abduction or the number of casualties at the time of reporting.

The incident adds to a troubling pattern of attacks across Kwara’s rural communities in 2026.

In April, suspected bandits attacked Mari and Dina communities in Patigi Local Government Area, killing at least five people, including three soldiers, according to reports. Residents were also forced to flee into nearby bushes, while several women and children were reportedly abducted.

In May, suspected bandits also attacked Yashikira in Baruten Local Government Area, where they reportedly set part of the Emir’s palace ablaze and abducted about 10 people. Security forces subsequently launched search-and-rescue operations in the area.

Another serious incident occurred in May when armed attackers invaded a prayer ground at Ori-Oke Ajaiye, near Ikiran village in Ekiti Local Government Area.

The Kwara State Police Command said three worshippers were killed and 15 others abducted during the night vigil.

The repeated attacks have intensified concerns over the vulnerability of communities in parts of northern Kwara, particularly those located near extensive forest routes that can provide hideouts and escape corridors for armed groups.

The latest incident has once again left residents facing the difficult choice of abandoning their homes or seeking refuge in nearby bushes whenever gunfire erupts.

For the people of Lata Nna, the immediate priority remains finding those who may still be missing and securing the safe return of the abducted resident, while the confirmation of the full casualty figure is awaited.

The attack is a grim reminder of the persistent security challenges facing rural communities in Kwara, where residents continue to call for stronger and more sustained protection against armed groups operating across the region.
