Family demands probe into Kwara farmer's death

The family of Abdulazeez Abiodun, a farmer popularly known as Kebe, has appealed to security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation after the Kwara Farmer Found Dead case took a tragic turn with the discovery of his body in a bush in Isin Local Government Area.

Abdulazeez Abiodun was reported missing after leaving his home in Isalu at about 7 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, to work on his cocoa farm in Owa-Onire.

According to the family, the farmer failed to return home that evening, prompting relatives and local hunters to begin a search.

Speaking on Tuesday, Abdulazeez Abiodun’s second daughter, Abdulazeez Rofiat, said the search party first located her father’s motorcycle parked at the farm before extending the search into the surrounding bush.

“When the hunters got to his farm, they found only his motorcycle parked there. Seeing the motorcycle without my father filled us with fear. We initially believed he might have been kidnapped and waited anxiously, expecting that someone would contact us to demand a ransom. However, no call ever came,” Rofiat said.

According to Rofiat, the search ended in a devastating discovery.

“After searching for some time, far away from where his motorcycle had been parked, they found my father’s lifeless body in the bush. His two hands had been tied, and he had been brutally killed,” Rofiat alleged.

The grieving daughter described Abdulazeez Abiodun as a devoted husband, caring father and hardworking farmer whose daily routine centred on providing for his family.

“The pain of losing my father in such a cruel and heartbreaking manner is something our family cannot put into words. He was more than a father. He was a loving husband, a caring parent and a hardworking man who left home that morning simply to work on his farm and provide for his family. He never returned home,” Rofiat said.

The family has urged the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible, insisting that justice must be served.

Rofiat also expressed concern about what the family described as a lack of updates since officers attached to the Isalu-Isin Divisional Police Headquarters reportedly recovered the deceased’s motorcycle from the scene.

“We reported the incident to the Police Division in Isalu-Isin and I learnt that the Police had retrieved the motorcycle from the scene, but we are not hearing anything again concerning it,” Rofiat added.

The incident has heightened concerns over attacks on farmers and rural insecurity in parts of Nigeria, where criminal activities have continued to affect farming communities and livelihoods.

Security experts have repeatedly called for stronger intelligence gathering, improved rural policing and closer collaboration between local communities and law enforcement agencies to tackle violent crime.

As of the time of publication, the Kwara State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident or confirmed the circumstances surrounding Abdulazeez Abiodun’s death.
