Lagos Assembly suspends confirmation of two Sanwo-Olu LGSC nominees

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday suspended the confirmation of two nominees forwarded by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for appointment into the Local Government Service Commission (LGSC). The decision followed further review of their submissions during plenary on 24 July 2026.

The affected nominees are Durosimi Yinka and Seriki Ahmed. Their confirmations were deferred pending additional scrutiny by the lawmakers.

In contrast, the Assembly confirmed three other nominees after they successfully completed the screening process. They are Hakeem Bamgbola, former Chairman of Itire/Ikate Local Council Development Area; Olaleye Samsudeen, former Chairman of Isolo LCDA; and Olabanji Folashade, immediate past Vice Chairman of Ikorodu Local Council.

The decisions followed the presentation of the report by the House’s 12-member ad-hoc screening committee, chaired by Mojeed Fatai Adebola, representing Ibeju-Lekki Constituency I.

Presenting the report, Adebola stated that all five nominees appeared before the committee. They were assessed based on constitutional provisions, relevant laws, professional backgrounds, previous records, character, presentations, and responses during the exercise. The evaluation adhered to Sections 106 and 192 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, subjected the committee’s recommendations to a voice vote. The House adopted the report, approving the three nominees while placing the other two on hold.

In a related development, the Assembly endorsed the introduction of mechanised sweeping operations along Section 1 of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway. Lawmakers, however, insisted that the initiative must not result in job losses for manual street sweepers.

This position followed the adoption of a report by another ad-hoc committee chaired by Olumoh S. L. (Ajeromi-Ifelodun Constituency) on an Irrevocable Standing Payment Order (ISPO) in favour of BlueCap Technology Limited.

Presenting the report, Olumoh noted that officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), led by Managing Director Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, explained that manual sweeping alone was insufficient for the highly populated road corridors.

While acknowledging the benefits of modern technology for better sanitation and road safety, the lawmakers expressed concern over potential impacts on the livelihoods of existing street sweepers, many of whom are women.

Speaker Obasa emphasised the need to protect workers during the transition. The Assembly also demanded greater transparency on the repayment structure of the ISPO and directed the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget to account for any financial commitments in future budgets.
