Lagos begins Anthony Corridor repairs, warns of traffic delays

Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi has announced the commencement of rehabilitation work on the damaged Anthony Village service lane, with the project already causing significant traffic disruption along the busy Anthony Corridor.

The roadworks, which began this week near the Anthony Village Bus Stop on Funsho Williams Avenue, have slowed traffic on a key route linking Fadeyi, Gbagada, Oshodi and Ikorodu Road.

Excavation and construction activities have reduced the flow of vehicles, while pedestrians have also been urged to exercise caution around the work site.

Addressing residents, Osiyemi appealed for patience as the state government undertakes what it described as a more durable solution to a long-standing problem.

“This road has been bad for a while, exacerbated by the constant rains in Lagos. The government has been repairing this road with asphalt, and whenever the rains come, it gets damaged again until the next cycle. So, the government has decided to put a more permanent solution in place,” the commissioner said.

According to Osiyemi, contractors will replace the failed asphalt surface with interlocking stones, a method expected to improve the road’s durability against heavy rainfall.

He added that construction teams have been directed to work continuously to complete the project within three to four days, subject to favourable weather conditions.

The Anthony Village service lane has experienced repeated deterioration in recent years, creating persistent traffic bottlenecks despite several rounds of maintenance.

The latest intervention reflects the state’s effort to adopt a longer-lasting engineering solution rather than recurring temporary repairs.

To minimise congestion, the Lagos State Government has advised motorists travelling from Fadeyi towards Gbagada and the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway to avoid the Anthony connection and use the Pedro route instead.

Drivers heading for Oshodi, Anthony and Ikorodu Road have also been encouraged to consider alternative inner-city routes.

Osiyemi acknowledged that the rehabilitation would temporarily inconvenience commuters but expressed confidence that the completed project would improve traffic flow and reduce recurring road failures.

The project comes as the state continues upgrading critical transport infrastructure to improve mobility across the commercial capital, particularly during the rainy season when road surfaces often deteriorate more rapidly.
