Commercial bus drivers on the Iyana Ipaja to Iyana Iba corridor in Lagos withdrew their vehicles on Monday, 14 September 2026, leaving Lagos commuters stranded in a protest against alleged extortion by traffic and security officials.
Drivers who spoke to journalists said daily demands for money had become unbearable.

They named officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Road Safety Corps and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, often called agberos.
LASTMA teams, they said, regularly seized buses over infractions and sometimes held them all day, wiping out fares for owners and crews.
The stoppage was meant to force attention, not to redesign the city’s transport map. For passengers on one of the city’s busy western axes, the effect was immediate: fewer danfos, longer waits and a scramble for any vehicle still moving.
The claim is familiar. Commercial operators in Lagos have for years argued that unofficial levies sit on top of legal charges and eat the day’s profit before a bus has completed a few trips.
The state, for its part, presents LASTMA and related agencies as enforcers of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law. Impoundment is official policy against illegal parks, route violations and other breaches. That gap between “fine” and “shake down” is the argument the drivers want heard.
There is a wider labour backdrop. Members of the Joint Drivers’ Welfare Association of Nigeria recently pressed the state over harassment by people posing as union men.
The Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Honourable Sola Giwa, has said unions would meet to examine those complaints and that enforcement would target touts at bus stops. That process does not, by itself, settle Monday’s corridor strike.
No official from LASTMA, the Police, the FRSC or the NURTW is quoted in the first reports answering the specific Iyana Ipaja allegations. Until they do, the public record is one sided: drivers describing lost hours and commuters paying the price in time.

The Lagos commuters stranded episode will ease when buses return. The grievance they parked with will not, unless the state shows which payments are lawful and which are not.
