Severe flooding disrupts traffic on Lagos–Ore road

Heavy flooding has disrupted movement along the Lagos–Ore Road after intense rainfall submerged sections of the major highway linking Lagos with several South-West and South-South states, leaving motorists stranded and causing severe traffic congestion.

Videos and eyewitness accounts shared on Thursday showed large portions of the highway covered by floodwater, with vehicles moving slowly through the affected areas while others were forced to stop. Some commuters also struggled to navigate the flooded sections on foot.

The flooding has once again highlighted the vulnerability of one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors during the peak of the rainy season.

The highway serves as a vital route for commercial vehicles, interstate travellers and the movement of goods across the region, making any disruption significant for businesses and commuters alike.

Although no official reports of casualties had been confirmed at the time of filing this report, motorists were advised to avoid driving through deep floodwaters due to the risk of vehicle damage, accidents and possible road collapse.

Flooding has become a recurring challenge along parts of the Lagos–Ore corridor, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

Residents and road users have repeatedly attributed the problem to inadequate drainage systems, blocked waterways and rapid urban development, which often prevents rainwater from flowing freely.

As of Thursday, government authorities had yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the latest flooding incident.

However, road users were encouraged to exercise caution, monitor traffic updates and consider alternative routes where possible until water levels recede.

The latest incident comes amid the annual rainy season, when the Nigerian Meteorological Agency has consistently warned of increased rainfall and the possibility of flooding in several states.

Experts have continued to stress the need for improved drainage infrastructure, regular desilting of waterways and stricter environmental management to reduce the impact of seasonal flooding.
