The grim discovery was made in the western coastal region near Zawiya during a security operation targeting human smuggling networks.
The ministry identified the arrested suspect as Mohamed Ali Zreik, a suspected organiser of migrant trafficking across the Mediterranean.
Officials said Zreik will face interrogation and potential prosecution under Libya’s criminal statutes governing human smuggling and murder.
Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha described the discovery as a “shocking reminder of the perilous journey faced by migrants” and vowed to intensify operations against traffickers.
“The exploitation of vulnerable individuals must end,” Bashagha said during a briefing in Tripoli.
Authorities noted that forensic teams are conducting examinations on the remains to establish the identities of the deceased and determine the exact circumstances of their deaths.
Local human rights groups called the discovery “a humanitarian tragedy that underscores the need for urgent international intervention.”
The incident comes amid rising concerns over the smuggling of migrants from North Africa to Europe, with Libya remaining a key departure point.
International organisations have repeatedly urged Libyan authorities to strengthen protections and dismantle trafficking networks.
The operation that led to the mass grave discovery also resulted in the seizure of vehicles and documents believed to be linked to other planned smuggling activities.
