Luis Suarez penalty heroics lifted Inter Miami past Tigres 2-1 in the Leagues Cup as Messi sat out
Luis Suarez penalty brilliance carried Inter Miami to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Tigres UANL on Wednesday night, as the Uruguayan striker netted from the spot in both halves to book his side a place in the Leagues Cup semi-finals.

With Lionel Messi sidelined due to a recurring muscle issue, all eyes were on Suarez — and the 38-year-old didn’t disappoint. In a match that lacked clear-cut chances, it was his composure under pressure that proved decisive.
“Every day I just try my best to help the team win,” Suarez said after the match — and he did just that.
The breakthrough came in the 20th minute when a handball by Tigres’ Javier Aquino inside the box gifted Inter Miami a penalty. Suarez coolly slotted it home, giving Miami a vital lead.
Tensions rose midway through the game as teammates and opponents clashed, and head coach Javier Mascherano was shown a red card at halftime for arguing with officials. Despite the drama, Inter remained focused.
Tigres found an equalizer in the 67th minute through Angel Correa, but another handball by Aquino late in the game handed Suarez a golden opportunity — and he buried it once again from the spot in the 87th minute, this time sending goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman the wrong way.
Miami’s win keeps their Leagues Cup title defense alive and sets up a heated all-Florida semi-final against rivals Orlando City, who edged past Toluca FC in a tense penalty shootout.
Assistant coach Javier Morales explained Messi’s absence:
“We rely on how Leo feels, and it wasn’t the best. We preferred not to take risks.”
With the Luis Suarez penalty show keeping Miami’s campaign alive, fans will hope Messi returns soon — but Suarez has made it clear he can carry the weight when needed.
