Household economist and family advocate Dr Adetutu Afolabi has led discussions on marriage, financial stability, sexual intimacy, parenting and family law at the Marriage and Money Summit 2.0, promoting a holistic approach to building stronger households and lasting generational wealth.

Convened by Afolabi, the summit brought together speakers and participants to examine how emotional connection, financial intelligence, effective communication and shared responsibilities can contribute to healthier relationships and more resilient families.

The event went beyond conventional conversations about love and money, focusing on six interconnected aspects of family life: love, marriage, money, sex, parenting and family law.

Afolabi said successful marriages require more than affection, stressing the importance of financial wisdom, emotional intimacy, intentional parenting and an understanding of the legal responsibilities involved in family life.

“A successful marriage is not built on love alone. It requires financial wisdom, emotional connection, healthy intimacy, intentional parenting and an understanding of the legal responsibilities that protect the family,” she said.

She added that recognising the emotional, financial and generational implications of decisions made within the home could help couples approach marriage as a collaborative partnership.

“When couples understand that every decision made within the home has emotional, financial and generational consequences, they begin to approach marriage as a collaborative partnership rather than an individual struggle,” Afolabi said.

The summit featured contributions from Pastor Bisi Adewale, Mr Akinropo Akinola, Mr Ifeanyi Maduka, Dr Victor Afolabi, Dr Pamela Udoka and Barrister Bisi Adebayo.

The speakers shared perspectives on strengthening relationships, managing household finances, building intimacy, raising children and protecting family interests.

Discussions covered financial literacy for couples, wealth creation, marital communication, sexual intimacy, parenting strategies, family asset protection and generational wealth planning.

The event also encouraged singles and engaged couples to discuss financial expectations, intimacy, parenting values and long-term goals before entering marriage.

For married couples, the focus was on promoting transparency, teamwork and shared purpose while addressing financial secrecy, unhealthy competition and emotional disconnection.

As a household economist, Afolabi advocates treating the family as an important economic unit in which financial decisions, relationships and shared responsibilities influence overall household wellbeing.

The central message was that while love may bring two people together, financial wisdom, intentional partnership and shared responsibility can help couples build a lasting family legacy.
