MAX expands EV network with 6,000 vehicles

MAX has expanded its electric mobility network across West Africa, deploying more than 6,000 electric vehicles and facilitating over 350,000 battery swaps as it builds infrastructure to support commercial riders.

The company said its network now spans Lagos, Ibadan, Sango Ota, Sagamu and Abeokuta in Nigeria, as well as Accra in Ghana and minigrid communities across Ogun, Niger and Kano states.

Beyond deploying electric vehicles, MAX said it has developed a battery-swapping system designed to reduce downtime for commercial riders, whom the company refers to as “Champions”.

The system allows riders to exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones, enabling them to continue their journeys without waiting for conventional charging cycles.

Aderonke Olubowale, Senior Vice President, Partner Operations at MAX, said the infrastructure was designed around the practical challenges faced by riders.

“This infrastructure was crafted with a keen understanding of the everyday challenges, ensuring that our vehicles remain efficient, reliable and consistently ready to deliver,” she said.

The company said more than 60,000 Champions have passed through its ecosystem, with access to mobility assets providing opportunities for income generation and vehicle ownership.

MAX said women are also increasingly participating in its mobility ecosystem, gaining access to productive assets and income-generating opportunities in a sector traditionally dominated by men.

The company has also expanded the energy infrastructure supporting its electric mobility operations.

According to MAX, it has installed more than 1MWp of solar photovoltaic capacity across its network and generated over 200,000 kilowatt-hours of solar energy.

The company said the combination of electric vehicles, battery-swapping infrastructure and renewable energy forms an integrated system aimed at improving the reliability and productivity of electric mobility.

Chinwe Adighiogu, Senior Vice President, Products at MAX, said the company sees the transition to electric mobility as broader than replacing conventional vehicles.

“We see electric mobility as much more than a vehicle transition. The opportunity is to rethink how people access mobility, how they finance productive assets and how technology can make that experience more efficient and accessible,” she said.

MAX said its expansion reflects its broader vision of “Powering Africa’s Forward Movement”, with a focus on developing the infrastructure, energy systems and human networks needed to support electric mobility at scale.

The company’s latest figures highlight the growing role of battery swapping and renewable energy in its strategy to keep commercial electric vehicles operational while creating access to income-generating mobility assets.
