MC Oluomo NURTW leadership affirmed as he rejects Tajudeen Baruwa’s secretariat takeover, citing ongoing legal processes and stay of execution

Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya has affirmed that he remains the National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), following a reported takeover of the union’s Abuja secretariat by Tajudeen Baruwa.

In a statement posted on his Instagram page on Monday, Akinsanya described the development as a “forceful takeover” and emphasised that due legal processes were still ongoing.

He noted that he was not a defendant in the court ruling relied upon by Baruwa and that the judgment had been appealed, with a stay of execution in place.

“The National President wishes to intimate members of the union and the general public that he was not a defendant in the purported judgment.

The judgment has been appealed, and a stay of execution has been duly entered,” the statement read.

Akinsanya urged union members to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding, reiterating that he retains authority over the NURTW. “Alhaji Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya remains the National President of NURTW,” he said.

The confrontation comes amid a prolonged leadership tussle within the union, following a series of internal disputes and court cases.

On Monday, Baruwa’s faction reportedly took control of the Abuja secretariat, citing enforcement of decisions by the National Industrial Court and the Court of Appeal, which he claimed upheld his position.

Baruwa stated that his faction had waited nearly two years for compliance with the rulings and described the secretariat takeover as peaceful and in accordance with court directives, although he alleged that one supporter was attacked during the process.

The standoff has further heightened tensions within the NURTW, with both camps asserting legitimacy and control, leaving union members and stakeholders awaiting the resolution of pending legal challenges.
