A motorcycle rider whose identity has yet to be established was shot dead by two suspected assailants near the back gate of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) in Lagos State on Saturday evening, 10 October 2026, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing.

The victim was reportedly riding through the area when two masked men crossed his path and opened fire before fleeing the scene. The incident was reported by PUNCH Metro on Monday, 12 October.

A community source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the incident, described the attack as sudden.

“The incident happened in the evening, and the attack was sudden. He was on a motorcycle when two masked men emerged from nowhere, shot him and fled the scene,” the source said.

A police source told the newspaper on Sunday that officers had commenced an investigation to establish what happened and identify those responsible.

The source also suggested that the killing might be linked to cult-related activity, although the motive had not been conclusively established.

“We received information about the incident and are working to establish what happened and identify those responsible. Although there are indications that the shooting is cult-related,” the police source said.

The deceased’s remains were subsequently deposited in a morgue, according to the report.

She promised to provide an update, but no further information had been made available by the time the report was filed.

The killing has raised concerns about safety around the YABATECH area, where students, residents, traders and commercial motorcyclists move through surrounding roads and neighbourhoods.

However, the available account did not establish whether the victim was a student, a member of staff or a resident of the area.

It also did not indicate whether the attackers knew him before the shooting or whether any arrests had been made.
