Mr Real insecurity criticism calls out artists and fans for releasing music and clubbing amid Nigeria’s worsening security situation

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Okafor Uchenna Victor, professionally known as Mr Real, has condemned fellow musicians and fans for continuing to release new music and frequent nightclubs despite worsening insecurity across the country.

Mr Real insecurity criticism was delivered in a recent video broadcast, where the “Legbegbe” crooner described the behaviour as insensitive given the daily reports of violence and unrest affecting many Nigerians.

The singer said he has refrained from releasing new songs because of the prevailing national mood, which he characterised as deeply troubling.

“I wake up to terrible news every day. I am even scared to drop songs because of the terrible things happening in Nigeria,” Mr Real said.

“Artists who are releasing songs are trying because I don’t know the kind of mind they have. How do some artists do it?”

In a striking and emotional appeal, he questioned the apparent disconnect between the entertainment scene and the realities faced by citizens.

“This country is burning. People are dying. Some individuals have turned insecurity to business and we still go to club. That is the problem,” he said.

Mr Real acknowledged that individuals are entitled to personal enjoyment but argued that the current situation calls for greater awareness and restraint.

“You can argue that you have your own life to live. I also can’t deny that I don’t club or enjoy my life. But can’t you see that it is not normal? It is like we are under a spell to be docile no matter how worse things get. Is it normal?” he added.

The comments have ignited debate within Nigeria’s music industry, with some interpreting them as a powerful call for reflection, while others maintain that music and social life offer necessary relief during difficult times.

The controversy highlights an ongoing tension between entertainment and social responsibility, as public figures respond to the pressures of a nation grappling with insecurity.
