The air operation targeted bandit locations around Musawa, Matazu and Danmusa local government areas of Katsina State, as well as the Tsanyawa axis of neighbouring Kano State.
The Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu Danmusa, confirmed the development during a telephone interview on Monday.
Danmusa said the operation was based on credible intelligence and was supported by information provided by repentant bandits familiar with the movement of criminal groups in the area.
He explained that the bandits were struck while returning from attacks on communities in the Tsanyawa area of Kano State.
According to the commissioner, those neutralised were foot soldiers loyal to Baidu, a notorious bandit leader who has rejected recent peace efforts in Danmusa and surrounding communities.
Danmusa said the state government would not allow criminal groups to undermine ongoing peace initiatives.
He stressed that dialogue would not weaken the resolve of security agencies to confront banditry.
He added that improved intelligence gathering, collaboration between security agencies and support from local communities had strengthened recent security operations across Katsina and Kano states.
Residents of affected communities confirmed that the airstrikes took place and said several armed men were killed during the operation.
Some residents reported that weapons and other items believed to belong to the bandits were recovered at the scene.
While welcoming the military action, community members urged the government to prioritise the reconstruction of villages destroyed by years of bandit attacks.
They also called for rehabilitation and empowerment programmes to support lasting peace.
The Nigerian Air Force has yet to issue an official statement on the operation. However, security sources said further operations are ongoing in the affected areas.
